Hoya Corporation Hit with $10 Million Ransomware Attack

Estimated read time 2 min read

Hoya Corporation, the Japanese global leader in optical product manufacturing, recently fell victim to a sophisticated ransomware attack.

Hackers from the notorious Hunters International ransomware group exfiltrated around 2 terabytes of data, including confidential information, research and development data, technical drawings, and even biometric data.

The attack, which began in early April, initially manifested as a “system failure” that took servers offline at several of Hoya’s production plants and business divisions. The company quickly realized this wasn’t a mere technical glitch but a deliberate cyber assault, likely stemming from unauthorized access to their servers.

The attack was first discovered when Hoya’s overseas office detected a system discrepancy on a Saturday. Despite efforts to isolate the affected servers, the disruption spread, forcing the company to shut down production and apologize to its customers.

The company’s consumer eyeglass lens unit, Hoya Vision Care Co, was particularly affected, with orders for lenses halted due to the system failure.

The Hunters International ransomware group claimed responsibility, alleging they had exfiltrated a staggering 2 terabytes of data. The attackers are reportedly asking for a whopping $10 million in exchange for a file decryptor and a promise not to release the stolen data.

This hacked data reportedly included sensitive information such as confidential documents, research and development data, technical drawings, and even personal information of employees and senior managers.
